Stone Dust, Old Slabs and a Better Floor

Most of the epoxy flooring we put down in Oolitic goes over concrete that has already worked hard for decades. The town was laid out in 1896 by the Bedford Quarries Company for one purpose: cutting building stone. Plenty of local families have a garage or outbuilding that has held trucks, saws and pallets of stone gear. Those floors tend to be worn, dusty and stained, and they respond well to a ground and coated finish.

The quarry is part of daily life here

Oolitic gets its name from the egg-shaped grains in the limestone under it. The quarries just north of town have been worked since the 1830s. One of them, the Empire Hole about half a mile north, sent roughly 35 million pounds of stone to New York in 1931 for the Empire State Building. That history shows up in garages too. Fine limestone dust tracks in on boots and tires and settles into bare concrete, where it never fully sweeps out. A sealed floor gives that grit nothing to cling to.

What we usually find on an Oolitic slab

  • Surface dust packed into the pores, which has to be ground out before anything will stick
  • Old paint or porch enamel that is lifting in patches
  • Oil and hydraulic fluid stains from trucks and equipment
  • Hairline cracks plus a few wider ones near the garage door
  • Chipped control joints where heavy loads have rolled across

Each item gets handled before coating. Grinding removes the dust layer and loose paint. Oil spots are cleaned or treated. Cracks and joints are filled through our concrete crack and floor repair service, then ground flush so they do not telegraph through the finish.

A small town with a lot of older houses

Oolitic covers about two-thirds of a square mile. The 2020 census counted 560 housing units there, and about one in ten was vacant. When a house in town changes hands or gets fixed up, the garage and basement are often the last rooms to get attention. A coated floor is one of the quicker ways to make those spaces usable again. We see two common jobs: a garage cleaned up for parking and a hobby bench, and a basement turned into dry storage or a laundry area.

Matching the system to the use

  • Garage floor epoxy with a clear topcoat for daily parking and winter slush
  • Epoxy flake floors for owners who want the floor to hide limestone dust between cleanings
  • Polyaspartic floor coating when a vehicle or work truck needs to be back inside quickly
  • Basement floor epoxy after a moisture reading confirms the slab is dry enough
  • Shop and commercial floor epoxy for stone-working and repair shops with heavy rolling loads

Weather and timing

Oolitic has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. We like to coat unheated garages from late spring into early fall, when the slab is warm enough for the base coat to cure properly. Heated basements and insulated shops can be scheduled in colder months. On the day of the job we check slab temperature and moisture, and we move the date if conditions are wrong.

Oolitic Questions

My Oolitic garage floor is covered in fine limestone dust. Can it still be coated?

Yes. The dust sits in the top layer of the concrete, and our diamond grinding removes that layer. We vacuum as we grind, so the slab is clean and open before the first coat goes on. Once sealed, new dust stays on the surface and sweeps or mops off.

Is a flake floor or a solid color better for a work garage?

Flake hides dust, tire marks and small scuffs between cleanings, and the texture adds grip. Solid color looks cleaner but shows dirt sooner. Many Oolitic customers with a work truck or stone tools choose a flake floor with a durable clear topcoat.

Can you fix the cracks in an older garage slab first?

Usually. Fine cracks and chipped joints are filled and ground flush before coating. If a crack is wide, uneven or still moving, we will show you and talk through the options before quoting a coating.
